I’m putting together a small duffel bag of trail tools. I do have a basic set now with some tools and couple screw drivers etc., but I don't seem to have all the correct sizes, I also have a good Vai-air air compressor with a plug kit. I know the fantastic idiot engineers at Chrysler couldn’t make up their mind between metric and std. hardware(don’t get me wrong, I love my TJ but you’d think they could standardize bolts and screws), so my question is what sizes of wrenches, sockets, and other stuff will I need to make a good compact trail kit.

I'll list some of the tools that I carry.

Pitman Arm Puller
Tie Rod End Puller
Pry Bar
Hammer
Screwdrivers in various sizes
Vise Grips in various sizes
Channel Locks
Wire Cutters
Needle Nose Pliers in various sizes
Duct Tape (Yeah, it's a tool)
4"x6"x3' wood post
Basic tool set with metric and standard sockets (1/4",3/8",1/2")
Metric and standard open end wrenches
1/2" 12-point 1/2" drive socket for hub removal
Ratchet Straps

That's off the top of my head, I'm sure I'll remember more.

I "usually" have any tool that I need. That's where going out with a group is good. If I don't have the right tool, someone "usually" will.

This a prime example of why the right tools are needed. I snapped both front shafts at the splines and toasted the ends of the carrier and bearings, bent my draglink and broke a window. Then I drove home! This was two Sundays ago!

Thanks guys. The tool bag I’m using now has seen better days, broken zippers, lack of room for necessary tools, and small parts that I have forgotten what there for. I found a “camo” duffle bag that will hold everything I have, and then some, but it’s big and as we all know TJ’s don’t have much room in the back.
