It feels like my jeep is in four wheel drive much of the time. The wheels lock up when I go around a sharp turn. The jeep will also lurch forward after I have stopped and turned the engine off. I have tried numerous times to fix it wit no success. Anyone have any ideas of what could be the issue here?

More info needed. Which motor and t-case do you have? What have you done to try to fix it?

The Quadratrac (249) is a fulltime t-case. Meaning you are in 4wd all of the time. There isn't a 2wd mode. More than likely the viscous coupler inside the t-case is no good. This part is very common to fail and very costly to replace. Your best bet is to look for another t-case. Crying or Very sad

Thanks very much. This is very helpful. I actually took this to a transmission shop several years ago and they replaced the center carrier with an open carrier so it seems like they were trying to deal with this. Does it still sound like I need a new transfer case? Any ideas whether this is economically feasible for a 1998 jeep with 140,000 miles?

I'm not sure what you're referring to. Do you mean the transfer case?
