Initiation of George Washington National Forest Plan Announced

Roanoke, VA (February 16, 2007) - Forest Supervisor Maureen Hyzer has announced the initiation of the revision of the George Washington Forest Plan. The Forest Plan will provide broad direction for future management activities on the 1,065,389 acres that make up the George Washington National Forest. Public participation is essential to help determine how the Forest can meet the demands for the multiple uses that the Forest provides.

All interested individuals and groups are invited to a series of public workshops beginning in March of 2007. The workshops will involve discussions regarding current management direction that may need to change. Workshops will continue throughout the spring and early summer of 2007. The first phase of public workshop dates, times and locations are outlined below:

The Forest Service has monitored and reviewed current social, economic and ecological conditions and trends and has evaluated the Forest’s progress toward achieving the desired conditions that were identified in the 1993 Forest Plan. This evaluation can be found in the draft Comprehensive Evaluation Report (CER) now available on the world-wide-web at http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj. This website also contains other draft documents and information on the revision process.
